Periodontology is the study of the specialized hard and soft tissues supporting the teeth and maintaining their position in the jaw. This apparatus is known as periodontium. In many ways, mouth can be seen as a mirror of the general condition of the body. Periodontitis, which is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gums, is also triggered by systemic diseases apart from the main etiological agent i.e. plaque. Because of this association with general health and overlap with other medical disciplines, Periodontology can rightly be regarded as a “holistic†form of dentistry.
